Y-BLOCK VALVE PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS AND VALVE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES
Submitted by Mike Suter, FOMOCO TIMES

Proper valve train problem diagnosis, repair and adjustment is the key to getting your 239, 272, 292 or 312 Y-Block running smoothly, with leas engine noise and with more power. First, make sure that any abnormal noise is coming from the valve train itself. Get a 2 foot piece of windshield wiper vacuum hose. Put one end up to your ear and with the engine running put the other end [with valve cover removed] near each of the rocker arms nearest the valve springs. If you can't find where the clicking is coming from, it is not [noise] coming from the valve train. Other sources could be worn out exhaust control heat valve [at end of exhaust manifold], loose piston pins, loose flywheel bolts or loose fuel pump arm. Use the vacuum hose on these items also. –
All engines 54-.56 V8’s and 6’s use mechanical lifters. DO NOT"
adjust them with the engine running. To adjust the valves on these
engines you must run the engine for at least 30 minutes [to get the
engine block temperature normalized]. Stop the engine Then remove
the valve covers. Put 4 chalk marks on the crank shaft pulley 90
degrees apart. Starting at TDC, adjust the following valves:
NO. 1 — EXHAUST NO. 1 — INTAKE
NO. 4 — EXHAUST NO. 2 — INTAKE
NO. 5 — EXHAUST NO. 7 — INTAKE
Rotate crankshaft pulley clockwise with 13/16 socket, 1/2 inch breaker
bar or ratchet 180 degrees or 1/2 turn from TDC and adjust the
following valves:
NO. 6 — EXHAUST NO. 4 — INTAKE 'v ri.,.,
NO. 8 — EXHAUST NO. 5 — INTAKE
Rotate crankshaft pulley clockwise 270 degrees from last step [3/4 of a
turn] or 1/4 turn past TDC. Again adjust the following valves:
NO. 2 — EXHAUST NO. 3 — INTAKE *
NO. 3 — EXHAUST NO. 6 — INTAKE
NO. 7 — EXHAUST NO. 8 — INTAKE
