I bought a set of reproduction wires and they came with shields slipped over them. Since they are for more than 239 y-blocks I'm guessing the newer engines had shields, is that correct? One of my engines has unmolested wires, no shields.

Most likely, 54's came with the shields. Yours may be missing because they deterioated and fell off or the wires were changed some where in the past with a set that didn't have them.

they did not come with any thing like somebody hit wrong key.look more like 80-90 type wires.I hate mention eck er macs but he may show proper appearing wires.bear in mind when ready to replace before putting motor back in you must mount the wires in brackets (wire loom)on the engine or you be adding to your profanity vocabulary trying to mount after. good luck PS those wires are not only wrong but may not be proper length

I have a kit made by Classic Auto Supply. It included the rubber brackets just like the ones on the old engine and the FoMoCo emblems in the plug boots look the same. I've only assembled one side so far but the lengths are correct. I did remove the shields.

So you are saying the wires on the old engine in the picture were not installed at a Ford factory?

Actually, I think it is factory correct. These pictures show identical wire harness brackets and looms. One is from an engine that sat for decades in the Pacific Northwest the other from an engine out of Arkansas. Obviously the rubber is very disintegrated, but the wires are the same length and metal brackets are the same. Also, the spark plug boots all have the FoMoCo emblem molded into the rubber. I find it hard to believe that two owners, a couple thousand miles apart, installed the same spark plug wires on the two engines that came into my possession.
