Benjt, thanks for the info. especially on the gaskets for the Carb to intake manifold. I have disconnected the crossover thermostat on the right side of the engine but will look for one of those blocks you mentioned.

The next thing I will do is change out the entire ignition system New plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and router and new points and condenser.

Thanks to all those who replied, all of you suggestions are really helpful.

Finally got it figured out. It turns out it was a bad coil. I had changed the coil early on, but apparently that new coil was also defective. I had changed just about everything, points, condenser, plug wires, cap rotor fuel pump and carburetor. Also check for vacuum leaks, still no improvement. On a wild guess I bought another new coil from a different parts house and that was it.

After all that I order a high voltage coil from Mac's it has made a tremendous difference. She is running better than ever.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Glad you got it figured out. I have had a couple new coils be bad and it sure confounds the trouble shooting because you assume a new one will be good.

What about compression, easy to check, valves and clearance would affect smoothness...

I checked compression early on . 6 cylinders at 130 and one at 125 and one at 120. I did readjust the valves and haven't check the compression yet to see if there is any change.

It seems to me that the new high voltage coil is making her run at a little higher temp. Does it make sense that a high volt coil would increase the running temp?
