Slow progress. I decided I'm going to remove the crank pulley in order to remove the motor stabilizer mount, in order to hopefully have the clearance I need to remove the oil pan. I'm encouraged by what I have seen of the cylinder walls, but there is plenty of sludge, so my decision to remove the pan is probably a good one. What I didn't check before leaving the shop was the crank pulley. Is it threaded for easy removal or do I need to use a gear puller, or some other option. I've certainly screwed up a pulley in my life pulling from the outside, so I'd probably try to make a backing plate to actually pull from if it's not drilled. The TSM of course just says "remove pulley". Thanks for the wisdom!

You are gong to need a puller. Take out the bolt, remove the large washer, and put the bolt back in. The center piece of the puller will rest on the bolt head. Nearing the end of it coming off, you may have to screw out the bolt some to get it all the way off.

Check out the article I posted in the how to section called timing chain cover removal.
I used a chain wrench to hold the pulley while I loosened the crank bolt.
If your removing the pulley, this will be helpful.

removed the radiator and got the pulley off pretty easy from there. AND>>>>>> That allowed me to finally remove the oil pan. Not as gunked up as I expected, but glad I got it off and properly cleaned out. Now to find the proper yellow paint to dress up some of the pieces I took off.

Anything painted the block color is actually a cream color. Bill Hirsch in Newark NJ has the proper color. It is also a Packard color, if I remember correctly.

Yes, it's a very attractive motor color I think. I called it yellow because I was sticking with my man code rule of 8 colors. Is Bill on the forum here?
